The paper discusses the basic market requirements which have to be fulfilled by a modern solar control coating. It describes in what way the selectivity of solar control coatings can be maximized taking physical, technological and aesthetical barriers into consideration. Four different solar control coatings were optimized to meet typical market expectations and will be compared with each other: A hard-coating with no silver layer, a single, double and a triplesilver product. The layer sequences will be drafted and the thermal and optical performance will be discussed. An overview will be provided what coater hardware, metrology and processes are required for the different types of products.
